On the so called church Madonna dei Carozzi – sited on the boundary line of Montopoli di Sabina and Poggio Mirteto – not so much is known: in ancient times it was called St. Andrew in Scorticariis (the knackery), perhaps in reference to a slaughtering activities practiced in an area probably populated by serves (servi della gleba) in the Middle Ages.
As for the origin of its current name, the tradition tells of a long dispute between a religious order and a private family on the property. The longstanding dispute ended with the payment of a nominal sum, made up of a certain quantity of dried figs, locally called “carozzi”.
The elders tell that not so far in the nights between 7 and 8 December, the Immaculate Conception, in front of the church took place a party with brushwood bonfire, food and general merriment lasted until dawn, where women carried baskets of bread blessed and large amount of “carozzi”.
The building has a graceful structure outside, with reinforced edges to shoe pillars and the roof topped by a bell tower. Inside, the altarpiece consists of an eighteenth-century painting, very good workmanshipped, portraiying the Virgin Enthroned with the Child surrounded by angels.
