At the beginning of the very short Via G. B. Orsini, right in front of the Portonaccio of the first Orsini Palace in Montopoli di Sabina, the 16th-century Porta Maggiore, the main entrance to the historic center, stands out.
Porta Maggiore – which originally included the construction of a drawbridge ever realized – is the result of a complex expansion process and contextually redesign of the Country and its walls; the surrounding palaces are (accessing on the left) Palazzo Morichetti (on the right) and Palazzo Giannotti-Perrini (today Fiori).
Opposite the Porta Maggiore outside area – commonly called Fuori Porta – is a vantage point that offers a breathtaking view of the surrounding valley. This viewpoint is one of the most striking places in Montopoli di Sabina, where you can admire a landscape that stretches for miles, made up of rolling hills, olive groves and small villages scattered here and there.
From this point, the gaze wanders to the horizon, embracing the shades of green of the fields and forests, which change with the seasons. In spring and summer, the panorama is colored with bright, vibrant hues. In autumn and winter, the tones become warmer and more enveloping, creating an almost fairy-tale-like atmosphere.
The photos in the gallery were made in collaboration with the Facebook group “Photos of Sabina” edited by Fabrizio Mei.
WHAT YOU'LL SEE.
Porta Maggiore, which was originally intended to include a drawbridge that was later never built, is the result of an important phase of the village’s expansion and the subsequent reorganization of its defensive walls.
The area outside Porta Maggiore, commonly known as Fori Porta, has always been the traditional gathering and meeting point for the citizens of Montopoli. Recently, the local government has made the area below even more welcoming, providing it with new facilities and services.
