FROM THE DAM … .. A PROTECTED AREA
The Tevere-Farfa Nature Reserve has an area of about 700 hectares within the municipalities of Nazzano (Rm), Torrita Tiberina (Rm) and Montopoli in Sabina (Ri). Its history is inextricably linked to the construction of an artificial dam by Enel between 1953 and 1955 and to the morphology of the Tiber, which flows slowly along this stretch, forming wide loops and meanders.
The slower flow of river waters and the confluence of the Farfa torrent have in fact created Lake Nazzano which over the years has been populated by species of flora and fauna typical of wetlands. Gradually willows, poplars and alders colonized the banks of the basin, creating one of the few examples of “riparian forest” present in Lazio, while the reed and cattail covered the banks of debris that over time have accumulated near the banks or in the center of the lake, forming characteristic islets
THE NATURAL ENVIRONMENT
The river valley, typically alluvial with deposits of clay, sand and gravel, is bordered by hills of modest size made up of sediments of marine origin. The rich presence of birds in the lake environment is one of the reasons of greatest interest for visitors.
In addition to the ducks, such as the mallard, the teal, the wigeon and the tufted duck, it is possible to observe the great grebe, the coot, the kingfisher and birds of prey such as the marsh harrier and osprey. The reed bed, consisting mainly of straw and cattail, is sometimes embellished by the yellow flowering of marsh iris, while on clayey soils, between the roots of white and red willows, we find burdock and horsetail with the typical iron shape of horse.
