It is said that the nymph Nera, daughter of the god Appennino, fell in love with the young shepherd Velino. The goddess Juno, envious of their love, turned the nymph into a river. Desperate, Velino threw himself off a cliff to join her, giving rise to the spectacular waterfall that today bears the name Marmore.
