The Marmore Falls are one of Italy’s most fascinating natural wonders and are a must-see destination for lovers of nature, trekking and outdoor sports. Located a few kilometers from the city of Terni, these artificial waterfalls are among the highest in Europe, with a total drop of 165 meters divided into three spectacular levels.
The Marmore Falls have a very ancient origin and are the result of Roman hydraulic engineering. In 271 BC, the consul Manio Curio Dentato ordered the detour of the waters of the Velino River into the Nera River below to reclaim the Rieti plain, often subject to flooding and swampy areas. Since then, the falls have become a natural attraction of extraordinary beauty, visited over the centuries by poets, writers and travelers, including Goethe, Lord Byron and Giosuè Carducci, who celebrated its majesty in their writings.
In addition to their historical importance, the Marmore Falls are shrouded in a romantic legend that still fascinates visitors today. It is said that the nymph Nera, daughter of the god Appennino, fell in love with the young shepherd Velino. The goddess Juno, envious of their love, turned the nymph into a river. Desperate, Velino threw himself off a cliff to join her, giving rise to the spectacular waterfall that today bears the name Marmore.
Marmore Falls offers a unique experience through hiking trails, river sports and guided tours, making it an ideal destination for families, couples and groups of friends.
Marmore Falls can be visited year-round, but the experience varies depending on the season.
The opening of the floodgates is regulated by Enel for hydroelectric power generation, so it is advisable to consult the water release times before your visit to admire the waterfall in its full glory.
Visiting Marmore Falls means immersing yourself in a unique place where history, legend and nature come together to provide an unforgettable experience. Whether it’s a hike, a sporting adventure or a simple day of relaxation, this spectacular natural site delivers excitement to every type of traveler. With its combination of striking scenery, outdoor activities and cultural trails, Marmore Falls is one of the most fascinating destinations in Umbria and all of Italy.
