In the heart of Sabina, the Gole del Farfa Natural Monument offers an unspoiled canyon where untamed nature blends with over two thousand years of history. The trail follows the course of the crystal-clear waters of the Farfa River, which flows through a deep gorge flanked by high limestone walls covered in lush, tunnel-like vegetation.

Along the way, you’ll encounter extraordinary remnants of the past: an ancient Roman road carved into the rock, the remains of a high-medieval single-span bridge, ancient aqueducts, and the ruins of the Mole Patrizi Naro, historic water-powered mills used for grinding wheat and pressing olives. For adventure lovers, there is also a spectacular via ferrata nestled in the gorge. To protect the delicate ecosystems and biodiversity of the protected area, access to the trail and the via ferrata is limited and requires a reservation.

How does access to the via ferrata and the kits work?

The via ferrata allows you to explore the steepest sections of the canyon in complete safety. The use of personal protective equipment (PPE) is mandatory to use the via ferrata; the complete via ferrata kit can be picked up directly at the Tourist Information Center at Castello Orsini Naro in Mompeo.

Curiosity and History

What makes the “enchanted grove” unique?
At the entrance to the gorge, the canopies of poplars, willows, and alders intertwine to form a picturesque natural tunnel. The air maintains high humidity, which allows rare silvery mosses and lichens to grow on the rocks—valuable indicators of air purity.

What ancient structures can be seen along the river?
The route follows an ancient Roman road about five meters wide carved into the rock. A little further on, you cross a high-medieval bridge (5th–6th century) measuring eight meters and forty, without parapets, which served as a key transportation hub between Mompeo and Castelnuovo di Farfa.
