The Farfa Gorge Natural Monument, spread over an area of 35 hectares between the municipalities of Castelnuovo di Farfa and Mompeo in the province of Rieti, represents an enchanting portion of the Bassa Sabina territory, forming part of the Nazzano Tevere Farfa Regional Nature Reserve.
Located just 50 kilometers from Rome, the Farfa Gorges make an ideal destination for a day trip from the capital, offering a true paradise for trekkers and nature lovers. Anyone who ventures along the route will be surprised by the lush vegetation and crystal-clear waters that have shaped enchanting loops and canyons over the centuries. This unique, unspoiled and colorful corner of nature is a discovery that, until now, could only be found in the Revotano karst sinkhole in the municipality of Roccantica. Here, as in the Farfa Gorge, the trees are shrouded in long beards of verdant mosses, thriving thanks to their proximity to water and moisture.
Following the route along the Farfa Gorge, you will have the opportunity to enter a forest of holm oaks, turkey oaks and hornbeams, with the presence of poplars and willows that have created a true gallery forest.
The pebbly bed crossed by the Farfa River helps to keep the waters of this portion of the river particularly clear, which at times almost seem to take on a white hue due to the frothiness generated in the natural eddies and waterfalls along the way.
Even during the summer months, the water of the Farfa Gorge maintains its coolness and coldness, without discouraging those who choose to spend the warmer afternoons along its banks. At this time of year, many seek refuge on the banks of the Farfa, immersing themselves in an oasis of coolness and tranquility. The Farfa stream is famous as a bathing spot throughout Sabina, and its waters also find use in filling the historic Piscine di Farfa pools. Since 1960, these pools have become a summer destination for residents of Sabina and beyond, offering an ideal place to cool off and relax poolside.
