During the final stages of the Second War of Independence, the tragic and forgotten battle of Coal Valley in the municipality of Montopoli di Sabina took place, with the massacre of the Hunters of the Tiber by a group of French helped by the Papal Zouaves.
The Hunters of the Tiber were a Garibaldi volunteer body with the task of facilitating the Garibaldi and his Thousand’s arrival to Rome, but on the night of February 10, 1861 were surprised and slain along with their captain Giuseppe Albertini, whose plaque is still exposed in the Montopoli Cemetery.
