The Modern Automata Museum, founded in Montopoli di Sabina in 2001, is located in part on the old structure of Castelletto di Vezzano, previously mentioned by Curtis Bezanum since the eighth century among the donations of the Duke Lupo of Spoleto to the nearby Farfa Abbey.
The museum contains 200 automata – mechanical small paper sculptures, wood and metal ones made by artists from all over the world, which can be put in motion by the visitors.
According to the engineer Guido Accascina, the museum creator and manager, modern automata can be compared to Japanese Aiku, defined as “a small view of the world in three short lines”: modern automata fact can be called “a small vision of the world in a turn of the handle. “
A hundred of works are on permanent display in the museum, while the remaining half of the collection is made up of three exhibitions: Circus, The secret of the movement and Against the idea of war.
The Museum – collaborating on a European project – organizes courses for the construction of automata at schools, libraries, museums, cultural and Entertainment centres and hospitals pediatric center. The basic idea is that, by building one or more automata based on a nursery rhyme or a story, the children can acquire literary, artistic and mechanical skills.
