Located in the province of Rieti, the municipality of Casperia stretches between the left bank of the Tiber River and the western slope of the Sabine Mountains. This charming town has been recognized for its tourist and environmental excellence with the Italian Touring Club’s “Orange Flag” label, testifying to its commitment to the preservation and enhancement of local heritage.
The origins of Casperia are shrouded in mystery, but the area has been mentioned by historical authors such as Virgil, who mentions this area in Book VII of the Aeneid. Archaeological investigations in the localities of Paranzano and S. Maria in Legarano have revealed the presence of aqueducts dating from the 5th-4th centuries B.C., suggesting a long history of settlement in the region. Originally called Aspra until 1947, Casperia assumed its current name after developing significantly during the Middle Ages.
The medieval village is surrounded by imposing walls built in 1282 and is characterized by its narrow
lanes and stairways that climb to the heart of the town, culminating in the square of St. John the Baptist with the parish church of the same name. Ancient gates, such as Porta Romana and Porta S. Maria, guard the access to this historic center, where every stone tells the long and rich history of Casperia.
In addition to its history, Casperia is immersed in a lush natural landscape, with vast olive groves that
produce the renowned DOP oil of Sabina and mountains that offer breathtaking views and opportunities
for hiking. Notable peaks include Mount Macchia Gelata (1258 meters above sea level) and Mount Alto (1215 meters above sea level), while Fonte Cognolo represents the most significant perennial spring in the region.
A distinctive element of Casperia’s culinary culture is stringozzi aspresi, a traditional pasta that has gained recognition in the national list of Lazio’s Traditional Food Products (PAT). This specialty, along with other local products, celebrates the gastronomic richness of the area, attracting food and culture enthusiasts from all over the world.
Casperia continues to be a symbol of Sabina’s beauty and tradition, offering its
visitors a unique experience that blends nature, history and taste in one magnificent setting.
