Although the official name is Largo di Via delle Scalette, everyone in Toffia has called it Piazza Carbonara since time immemorial, and by extension the name has since passed to the whole area. Presumably there were once stores here where coal was stored and sold.

Although the official name is Largo di Via delle Scalette, everyone calls it Piazza Carbonara (Carbonara Square) in Toffia, and the name has been popularly extended to the whole area.

Once, here there were probably workshops where coal was stored and sold.

Stating at the topographical and urban planning, the area is marked by the classic village born close to the castle, where Toffia shows the third expansion phase of the original nucleus, culminated with the expansion of the walls and a new Door , Porta Maggiore.

Similarly to the nearby district Collitrone, the non-custodial village of Carbonara spread down to the village – closed by the curtain of the old city buildings walls- with no mansions, but low and simple houses, tipical for workers and artisans.

In the area, a part of the extended walls can be clearly seen.

The Carbonara district in Toffia is small but quaint, with two tiny but charming squares set among the palaces, where often musical groups and street artists perform during the Summer season.
