Towards Mount Tancia by Mountain Bike

Medium difficulty itinerary in the Sabine Mountains, between Salisano and Poggio Catino, passing through Mount Tancia. The route alternates between dirt and asphalt, but is not very busy.

You can reach Bocchignano by taking the Salario up to km 35.9, then turn towards Poggio Mirteto (Sp 313). At km 10.2, in the Colonnetta area, turn right (Sp 42) following signs for Salisano. After passing the Granari area, in the direction of Farfa, at km 14 turn left for Bocchignano.

Km 3.0 – 391 mslm Km 0.0 – 175 mslm
The starting point is the crossroads on the provincial road to Salisano at a church. Take the dirt road uphill – via piedimonte – to the right of the church that goes up towards S. Valentino di Poggio Mirteto

Km 0.6 – 245 mslm
Continue on the left uphill alternating steep cement ramps with dirt sections. At km 1 you pass a gate

Km 1.1 – 285 mslm
At a house you continue keeping to the left

Km 2.6 – 364 mslm
At the crossroads turn left onto asphalt

Once you have passed a steep ramp you cross another road and turn right. After 900 m at a sharp right bend, the asphalt gives way to a dirt road that climbs into the woods

Km 6.1 – 636 mslm
You come across a crossroads characterized by a large, illegible wooden sign. Continue on the right

Km 7.3 – 634 mslm
At the crossroads, continue on the left

Km 7.6 – 648 mslm
In the “Casale Ferri” area, you come across another dirt road. Take a left and cycle for 1 km on a good, flat surface

Km 8.7 – 626 mslm
Once you reach the provincial road, turn right onto asphalt. In the first km, you face some ups and downs. After crossing a small bridge – where it is possible to make a detour on foot to the cave of S. Michele (15 min) – the slope is felt

Km 11.7 – 784 mslm
Once you reach the saddle, the highest point of the day, turn right onto a dirt road passing by the old Osteria del Tancia, now converted into a hostel. As written on the signs, an important communication route passed through here until the last century

Km 12.1 792 mslm
At the crossroads, take the dirt road on the right. You gain more altitude and then begin the long descent towards Salisano. You pass by a farmhouse with an equipped area and enter the woods. Towards the village you meet the asphalt again

Km 19.2 – 416 mslm
At the crossroads, skip entering the village and turn left downhill

Km 19.7 – 389 mslm
Once you reach the provincial road, turn right. In 8 km you quickly return to Bocchignano. To avoid truck traffic, which is particularly heavy on weekdays, it is best to deviate as described below

Km 22.1 – 291 mslm
Leave the provincial road and turn left onto Via Roccabaldesca downhill

Km 22.2 – 288 mslm
After a few meters turn right onto Via Rocca. A couple of steep descents take us to the plain

Km 25.9 – 112 mslm
You find the main road again. Turn right and slightly uphill you return to Bocchignano in a couple of km
