Lake Paterno, also known as Lake Cotilia, is one of the most fascinating natural and historical sites in Lazio. Located in the municipality of Castel Sant’Angelo , this lake of karst origin is considered the ancient “umbilicus Italia,” or “navel of Italy,” according to Roman tradition. Visiting Lake Paterno means immersing yourself in a picturesque natural environment, rich in history and legends.

Lake Paterno is oval in shape, measuring approximately 150×190 meters and reaching a depth of over 50 meters. Its clear, cold waters are fed by underground springs and maintain a constant temperature, making it a unique ecosystem. This body of water, located about 430 meters above sea level, is a real gem for nature lovers and hikers.

From a historical and archaeological point of view, Lake Paterno was sacred to the Sabines and in Roman times became a place of worship dedicated to the goddess Vacuna, later assimilated to Victoria. Right in the center of the lake there was a small floating island where a sanctuary stood, a sign of the great spiritual importance of this place. Nearby are also the remains of the Baths of Vespasian and the Villa of Titus, evidence of the Roman imperial past.

Today, Lake Paterno is the ideal destination for those seeking excursions in Lazio, trekking nature trails and cultural itineraries. The trails surrounding the lake connect points of interest such as the Terme di Cotilia, the hamlet of Paterno and the medieval village of Castel Sant’Angelo. The area is perfect for day trips and discovering the beauty of the Valle del Velino.

In addition to its natural beauty, Lake Paterno is very popular with sport fishing enthusiasts. Its waters are home to species such as carp, tench, and largemouth bass. In summer, it is also possible to swim, paying attention to the depth and temperature of the water.
