In the heart of Sabina, in the municipality of Castel Sant’Angelo (RI), lies one of the most fascinating Roman archaeological sites in Lazio: the Fornici, also known as the Baths of Titus. This monumental complex, located in Pozzo Secco, overlooks the picturesque Paterno lake and the Velino Valley, offering a unique example of Roman engineering and architecture.
Those traveling along the modern Via Salaria can admire, even from a distance, the imposing Roman terraced wall that characterizes the complex. Approximately 60 meters long and over 11 meters high, the wall is marked by thirteen niches and fourteen buttresses that support the remains of the rooms above, built in reticulated masonry.
The construction features and materials found during archaeological excavations indicate that the building was first constructed between the late Republican era and the early Imperial period (1st century BC – 1st century AD). During the latest excavations, three rectangular rooms were uncovered, all facing south and equipped with limestone thresholds, confirming the architectural complexity of the villa.
According to the most recent interpretations, the Fornici were not simply thermal baths, but a prestigious Roman villa, designed to impress visitors with its spectacular scenography. It is believed that the area featured a system of artificial waterfalls that created water features visible from the Via Salaria: an extraordinary and rare scenic effect among the Roman villas of the Rieti area.
Today, the remains of the Roman villa offer an immersive experience combining archeology, landscape, and history. Visiting the Fornici means admiring the architectural ingenuity of the Romans and discovering a place that combines the natural beauty of the Sabina with priceless historical remains.
If you are passionate about Roman history, archaeological sites, or are looking for evocative destinations in Lazio, the Fornici di Castel Sant’Angelo are a must-see.
