Roman Gate

In the urban fabric of the city, Porta Romana is one of the four entrances to the city mentioned in the papers of the first quarter of 1500, together with Porta Aspra or S. Croce, Porta S. Lorenzo or Leone or S. Francesco and Porta S. Angelo or door Sabina.

His is a particular and controversial story. We do not know the date of its foundation, nor can we identify its location over the centuries, at least until the first twenty years of the nineteenth century. In fact, from reading the map of the Gregorian cadastre, we learn that the door was located in the same spot where it can be seen today.

In the drawing, however, the two columns do not appear as seen today, it would seem a simple opening made in the walls and finished on the section of the same. When then were the two brick pillars surmounted by terracotta sculptures depicting dogs with lion features that support the coat of arms of Magliano were built a knight, Cavalier Manlio, on horseback? The documentary contribution is once again crucial. A document preserved in the municipal historical archive; in fact, from a council of 1880 we learn that the council had approved the project for the construction of the Sabina gate based on a project by the architect O. Ormanni, the same who designed the loggia of Palazzo Vannicelli. Although the structural and material typology of the two doors is different, it is certainly around the same time that they were both built.
