It is the main gate of the town of Cantalupo, also known as the Clock Gate. On it are two statues, nicknamed “Bammocci,” full-length – made of white marble and 1.20 meters high – symbols of the municipality: the one on the left represents Mercury, the one on the right Minerva – missing her head. They appear to date from the 16th century.
Cantalupans are also nicknamed “Bammocciari” because of their strong connection to the two statues and because the story goes that they were once asked to choose between the water and the Bammocci and that they preferred the latter.
