The Porta Alchemica, also known as Porta Ermetica or Portone di Nicolò, is a striking monumental limestone arch dating from the 17th century, located in the heart of the village of Rivodutri. This portal was the main entrance to the Baroque palace belonging to the Camiciotti family, a noble and wealthy family engaged in the administration of public and ecclesiastical property. Today, only the doorway, which opens onto a garden, remains of the building, as the building no longer exists.

Recognized for its rich esoteric, cabalistic and alchemical symbolism , the door is striking for the engravings and enigmatic figures that adorn its structure, made in the late 16th century by an unknown sculptor, assisted by an equally anonymous alchemist. At that time, curiosity about hermetic knowledge was widespread among aristocrats, as evidenced by the famous case of Marquis Massimiliano Palombara in Rome, creator of the Porta Magica in his villa and frequenter of the esoteric laboratory of Queen Christina of Sweden.

The Rivodutri door preserves deep traces of this tradition. Engraved in the base of the right knocker is the phrase “QUID HOC FORTIUS”, with four straight lines alluding to the four basic elements. Among the most prominent symbols is the emblem of the god Hermes, considered the first seeker of the philosopher’s stone. Other emblematic engravings include “The ship crossing the sea,” “The tree with fruits,” “EX TUA MEA LUX – EX MEA TUA,” “TOT MIHI SUNT VIRES,” and “REX AND REGINA”. These symbols, although also found in Christian symbolism, testify to the connection between faith and alchemical research, as many alchemists relied on God for the success of their experiments.

Unlike the gate of Rome, that of Rivodutri also features the symbol of the palm tree, which is loaded with deep meanings: affirmation, renewal, eternal life, harmony and beauty. The date palm, in particular, is linked to the protection of love and the arts, such as dance and music.
