Peter Pan 2 Restaurant
Tradition and Taste in the premises of the old glassworks
Rediscovering the ancient flavors of traditional Sabine cuisine
Peter Pan 2 Restaurant is located on the premises of the old glassworks in Poggio Mirteto,
The glassworks “The Crystal Factory, ” started in 1827, became the most important production activity in the area, specializing in the manufacture of glass plates and bells. Initially fueled by wood, it later adopted coal and new melting technologies. The factory went through periods of expansion and crisis: in 1890 it was forced to close temporarily because of high operating costs, but reopened in 1891 with a Siemens furnace and new equipment.
In the early 1900s, the glassworks reached peak production, employing up to 140 workers, many from other Italian and foreign regions. However, logistical difficulties, increasing competition and high costs led to its final closure in 1948.
After years of neglect, in 1981 the municipality expropriated and demolished much of the structure to build a parking lot. Today, the only clearly visible element is the brick chimney, 34.6 meters high, with signs of the consolidation work carried out after the 1991 and 1997 earthquakes. Some parts of the original building also remain, such as the silica warehouses, characterized by red brick columns and cross vaults. Despite the alterations, these spaces retain historic architectural details, such as openings for silica discharge.
The structure of the glassworks reflected a complex organization of labor, divided into specialized teams. The production process involved melting raw materials, blowing glass to create cylinders, and then cutting it into sheets. Each operation required craft skills handed down over time. The use of central ovens ensured continuity of work, but the need for technological innovations made competition with other factories increasingly difficult.
Today, in these very historic surroundings stands Peter Pan Restaurant 2, which welcomes its guests to a place rich in memory. The restaurant’s unique atmosphere combines tradition and quality, keeping alive the link with the past and enhancing the heritage of the historic Crystal Factory.
