In the heart of the Rascino plateau , near Rivodutri, there is a truly unique tree: the Beech of St. Francis. Unlike other beeches, usually slender and with branches projecting upward, this specimen has an unmistakable shape, open like an umbrella, almost as if it wanted to offer shelter.
According to a popular tradition, the beech tree is said to have taken on this particular shape in the 13th century to protect St. Francis of Assisi, caught in a storm during a pilgrimage in the area. The saint used to frequent these places, as evidenced by the proximity of shrines dedicated to him and the historic event of the re-enactment of the Nativity, which took place in 1228 in Greccio, on the opposite side.
On the occasion of the Jubilee of 2000, a small mountain-style church was built on the plateau leading to the Beech, which today is a landmark for pilgrims and hikers. From there starts the path that leads to the majestic beech tree, immersed in a landscape of great peace and beauty.
In addition to the legend linked to St. Francis, popular tradition also tells of a curious episode: some people, in an attempt to cut branches to get wood, saw their axes bounce off without managing to nick the tree. A sign, perhaps, of the sacred and inviolable character of this place.
