The Rieti plain stands out as one of the rare settings in Lazio where water seems to dance in harmony with the sky. Framed between the generous spaces of the Sabini and Reatini Mountains, it constitutes a vital node of waterways, both surface and underground, bestowing an immeasurable, free and inexhaustible resource. Near Rieti, the Salto and Turano rivers merge into the Velino, while numerous springs at the roots of the mountains contribute to this fascinating ecosystem. In past eras, the basin was home to the majestic “Lacus Velinus,” which was almost completely drained by the Romans via the Marmore Falls in order to secure ample arable land. However, two small lakes survive as evidence of this era, becoming today important wetland sanctuaries and refuges for numerous species of waterfowl. Protected by a Regional Nature Reserve, we will explore both lakes, first the atmospheric Lake Ripasottile and then the tranquil Lake Lungo. We will walk their quiet shores among reeds and wet woods, or linger in the various huts to observe the rich bird life up close. But we will not limit ourselves to this: we will have the opportunity to appreciate the unique brightness of the plain, breathe in the scent of its wind, listen to the surrounding sounds, and contemplate the motionless and discreet circle of mountains as silent observers. In short, an unforgettable day discovering places that are remote and, for that very reason, charged with emotion and beauty.
