Montebuono is an enchanting village located among the green hills of Sabina, on the slopes of Mount San Benedetto, near Mounts Cosce and San Pancrazio. Its territory extends to the Tiber Valley, offering striking views and an authentic atmosphere.

Montebuono’s origins date back to Sabine and Roman times, with important historical evidence such as the Roman Villa of Agrippa’s Baths, which belonged to a general of Emperor Augustus. In the Middle Ages the village became a Benedictine fiefdom and saw the construction of the Church of St. Benedict in 1103, around which the town developed. Over time it came under the control of the Holy See and underwent several administrative transformations until it became part of the province of Rieti in 1927.

Montebuono preserves an architectural heritage of great value. The Church of San Pietro, dating back to the Roman era, and the Church of Santa Maria Assunta, built around the year 1000 with a Romanesque structure featuring three naves, are among the main points of interest. Just a few kilometers from the historic center lies the medieval village of Fianello, with the charming Church of Santa Maria Assunta in Fianello and the Hermitage of San Benedetto, a pilgrimage destination immersed in a timeless atmosphere.

The landscape of Montebuono is characterized by rolling hills covered with olive groves, vineyards and woods, typical of Sabina. The extra virgin olive oil, certified Sabina DOP, represents one of the excellences of the area, the result of a centuries-old tradition. The unspoiled nature and favorable climate make this village a perfect destination for those seeking tranquility, outdoor excursions and an authentic experience among history, culture and local flavors.

A fascinating aspect of Montebuono’s history is the 1950 discovery in Fianello of important marble sculptures from the Roman era, now preserved in museums in Rome. This discovery testifies to the historical importance of the area, once a crossroads of cultures and traditions.

Montebuono is an ideal destination for those who want to discover the beauty of Sabina, immersing themselves in a breathtaking landscape and in the history of a village full of charm and authenticity.
