The church was built in the commune of Cantalupo at the end of the 15th century to close the village, at the behest of the Company of St. Jerome, whose members had the right to burial there, as evidenced by inscriptions that were unfortunately destroyed during the last World War, along with some canvases. In fact, during their retreat in 1944, the Germans undermined the church. After the war it was rebuilt in two stages: in 1952 the side walls, in 1968 the roof and the interior. The bell gable and the high altar were also rebuilt according to the canons of the new liturgy.

The original church had been enlarged in 1725 to take the place of the parish church under renovation, changing from a rectangular chapel with a single altar dedicated to the saint to whom it is dedicated, to a larger Latin cross plan with a high altar in the apse and two side chapels.

In that church, in 1867, Garibaldini from Terni stopped, led by brothers Enrico and Giovanni Cairoli, who organized the Legion of 70 here, communicating the order to fight against the Pope’s army. On October 23 of the same year the clash took place at Villa Glori, Rome, where Enrico Cairoli found his death.

Although not deconsecrated, the church has been used as an Oratory for years, with the permission of the pastor.

CURIOSITY

The Well in Garibaldi Square

The well dug right under Garibaldi Square collected spring water on site.
A survey in 1988 showed that the well was built of leaf bricks with a perfect seal at the top, open at the bottom for water to flow in as it reaches the fixed and constant level determined by the principle of communicating vessels.
The well has a depth of 36-40 meters and is filled with water for 6 meters, is circular in shape with a diameter of about 1.50 m.
The municipality used this well for various uses such as washing the streets and sewers until the arrival of running water.
